When to Go — Beach Season Near Tangier

The two coasts behave differently. The Mediterranean beaches east of Tangier (M'diq, Martil, Restinga Smir) have warm, calm water from roughly June through September, which is also when lifeguards, lounger rentals and beach cafés operate at full strength. July and August are busy with Moroccan holidaymakers, especially weekends; June and September give you the same sea with a fraction of the crowds.

The Atlantic side (Asilah, Sables d'Or) runs cooler and breezier, with a consistent swell that surfers actually want. Water there peaks around September and October, when the summer wind drops and the sea has had all summer to warm. Winter brings real surf but swimming becomes a wetsuit affair.

1. Plage de M'diq — 40 Minutes

The most popular beach near Tangier. M'diq offers a long sandy bay with calm Mediterranean waters, and the town behind it is half the appeal: the promenade is lined with cafes, restaurants and ice cream shops, and the working fishing port at the eastern end serves some of the best grilled fish on this coast.

2. Martil Beach — 40 Minutes

3. Plage de los Tres Mosqueteros — 15 Minutes

The closest beach to the city centre. Just west of the port, this small urban beach has dark sand and a local crowd that comes for evening walks as much as swimming. Basic cafes sit nearby. It will not compete with M'diq for beauty, but for a quick dip without committing to a drive, nothing beats it.

4. Asilah Beach (Paradise Beach) — 45 Minutes

The real magic is the combination — swim in the morning, then lose the afternoon inside one of Morocco's most beautiful small medinas, famous for its annual mural festival.

The wild card. Sables d'Or ("Golden Sands") is a wide Atlantic beach with consistently good surf and far fewer people than anything near Tetouan. Development is minimal, which is exactly its charm — dunes, ocean and the scenic Loukkos River estuary next door. Come for a half-day of surf and space.

6. Restinga Smir — 45 Minutes
