After stepping outside the arrivals gate at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG), you will see official airport taxis waiting directly in front of the terminal. Since early 2026, grand taxi fares are calculated by the airport's official booking system rather than negotiated with drivers.
The fare depends on your destination and covers the whole vehicle, not per person. Full details of how the booking system works are below.
The airport lies about 12 to 15 km southwest of the city centre. A direct journey takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic along the main N1 expressway.

How Local Taxis Operate (Petit Taxis vs. Grand Taxis)
When traveling around Tangier, you will notice two main types of local cabs: small blue vehicles (Petit Taxis) and larger cream-colored vehicles (Grand Taxis). Blue petit taxis are allowed to pick up passengers at the airport and charge by meter, starting from 7 MAD for the shortest trips. Most arriving passengers still use the grand taxi booking system described below, or a pre-booked private transfer.
For a direct, private ride without sharing a vehicle with other travelers, booking a private sedan or minivan in advance is a convenient and straightforward option.
How the New Tangier Airport Taxi Booking System Works
Since early 2026, Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport runs an official taxi booking system inside the terminal. Instead of negotiating with drivers, you enter your destination at the booking counter and the system calculates the fare automatically from the distance in kilometres. You receive a printed booking ticket, then walk outside and board the first grand taxi in line. The price printed on your ticket is the price you pay.
Day-time fares follow the distance: 100 MAD reaches roughly as far as the Hotel Ahlen area, 150 MAD the Branes area, 200 MAD the city centre, the medina and most sea-facing hotels, and 250 MAD extends to the Malabata area and the Hotel Occidental. At night, 25% is added on top of every fare. In euros, the day-time ladder runs from about €9.50 to €24 depending on how far you travel.
The system sets the price, not the driver. That removes the arrival-day haggling travellers used to prepare for.

ALSA Airport Bus (Shuttle) to the City Centre
The cheapest way into the city. The ALSA express airport bus shows destination "AE" on its display and runs roughly hourly from outside the terminal to Tangier Voyageurs railway station in 50 to 60 minutes.
Tickets cost about 40 MAD, paid on board. Service ends around 21:00, so late arrivals need a taxi or a pre-booked transfer. Timetables change, so confirm the schedule at the stop on arrival.
Older guides mention a cheap "line 2B" city bus or an "Aerobus". Neither reflects the current service.

- Keep your booking ticket until the end of the ride. The printed fare is what you pay.
- If arriving past midnight, with children, or with significant luggage, pre-booking removes the stress of late-night terminal negotiation.
Common Misconceptions About Taxis in Tangier
“Petit taxis cannot pick up at the airport.”
They can. Blue petit taxis are allowed to collect passengers at TNG and charge by meter. The grand taxi booking system remains the standard choice for arrivals.
“Uber works in Tangier.”
Uber does not operate here, and no ride-hailing app picks up at TNG.
“Airport taxis use meters.”
No. The airport booking system calculates the grand taxi fare from the distance. Only city petit taxis run on meters.
