Tangier Taxi Prices at a Glance

Tangier has three main taxi options for getting around: petit taxis (blue, metered city trips), grand taxis (intercity rides in older Mercedes sedans), and private transfers (pre-booked chauffeur service at a fixed euro price). Since early 2026, Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport also runs an official taxi booking system that prints your fare on a ticket before you board, which removed most of the negotiation travellers used to face.

This page covers all four systems: what each one costs by day and by night, how the airport booking system calculates its fares, typical meter prices for common city routes, and when a pre-booked transfer is worth the small premium.

The Airport Booking System — How Fares Are Set

Since early 2026, Tangier Airport no longer leaves taxi prices to negotiation. Inside the terminal you tell the official counter your destination, the system looks up the distance in kilometres, and it prints a ticket with your fare. You pay or show that ticket, walk out, and board the first grand taxi in line outside. The printed price is final.

Because fares are distance-based, they fall into bands. The ones travellers actually use:

Blue petit taxis are also allowed to collect passengers at the terminal and charge by the meter instead of the ticket system. With luggage, though, most travellers take the booking-system grand taxi or a pre-booked transfer.

Petit Taxi — City Travel (Blue)

Petit taxis are the standard for getting around Tangier city. They are small cars painted blue with a yellow stripe — the same blue taxis allowed to pick up passengers at the airport terminal. By law, they seat a maximum of 3 passengers.

City centre short trips: 10-25 MAD
Airport to city centre: about 200 MAD day / 250 MAD night (airport booking system)
Port to city centre: 15-30 MAD
Hourly hire: negotiable, agree before starting

Petit taxis run on the meter for city trips. Insist the driver uses it (compteur in French). A typical meter fare from Grand Socco to the train station is around 12-15 MAD. If the driver refuses the meter, agree on a price before starting.

Grand Taxi — Intercity Travel (Old Mercedes)

Grand taxis are older Mercedes sedans that seat up to 6 passengers (3 in front, 3 in back). They operate on fixed intercity routes and depart when full. They are found at taxi stations (station de taxis) around the city.

Tangier to Asilah (from the airport booking system): about 300 MAD per vehicle by day, 450 at night
Tangier to Tetouan: about 450 MAD per vehicle by day, 550 at night
Tangier to Chefchaouen: about 800 MAD per vehicle by day, 1,000 at night
Tangier Airport (booking system): 100–250 MAD for the whole vehicle depending on destination

Grand taxis are cramped for 6 passengers with luggage. If you want the whole vehicle to yourself (recommended), negotiate a private hire rate — typically 1.5-2x the per-person price × 6.

Private Transfer — Fixed Prices, No Surge

Private transfers offer fixed, upfront prices in euros. No negotiation, no meter, no surge pricing. All prices are per vehicle, not per person: a group of four pays the same as a solo traveller, which is why the per-person cost often beats the airport taxi once you are two or more.

Each booking includes meet and greet in the arrivals hall, flight tracking (your driver adjusts to the actual landing time), door-to-door service, and a professional English-speaking driver. Child seats can be arranged on request at no extra charge. Payment of the balance is in cash or by card link as confirmed at booking.

Tangier to Chefchaouen, Tetouan & Asilah — Grand Taxi vs Transfer

Intercity travel from Tangier runs through either grand taxis or private transfers. The booking-system fares below are what the airport counter prints for the whole vehicle if you take a grand taxi directly from TNG; day rates apply before dark, night rates carry the 25% surcharge.

In town, grand taxis also run shared intercity routes from designated taxi stations, departing when the car fills up. Per-seat prices there are lower than a whole-vehicle hire, but you wait for the car to fill, share with five strangers, and luggage space is whatever is left. For a family or group, hiring the entire vehicle is the normal choice.

How to Avoid Taxi Scams in Tangier

Taxi overcharging in Tangier is an inconvenience, not a safety problem, and since the airport booking system opened it is much rarer than it used to be. The classic moves and how to shut each one down:

1. Airport arrivals: use the official booking counter inside the terminal. The printed ticket sets your fare and you board the first car in line. Ignore anyone offering a ride before you reach the counter
2. City petit taxis: ask the driver to start the meter (compteur) before setting off. The meter starts at 7 MAD
3. No meter, no deal: if a driver refuses the meter, agree on a price before starting — or step out and take the next blue taxi. Compare against the ranges in this guide first
4. Euro payments: fares are in dirhams. A driver accepting euros will round heavily in his own favour; pay in MAD where possible
5. Small bills: have 10s, 20s and 50s ready. Drivers rarely have change for a 200 MAD note, and "no change" is itself a small scam
6. Night rides: expect the legitimate night surcharge (+25% on airport and intercity fares), but nothing more. A quoted 400 MAD to the city centre at night is not a surcharge, it is a rip-off
7. Medina drop-offs: cars stop at the nearest gate, not your riad door. That is normal for every taxi and transfer. If someone at the gate insists on carrying your bags, agree the porter price (a few dirhams, or ~20–50 MAD for heavy luggage) before they pick anything up
8. Last resort: pre-book a transfer. It removes every negotiation on this list by design
